Micro Switches: The Tiny Soldiers With Big Impacts

What are they and How They Work?

Microswitches are operated mechanically. These are electrically operable switches with an actuator and also, terminals known as common which are normally open and closed. Also termed as a snap-action switch that can be operated by a spring-loaded lever inside them.

This lever is an important intermediate as it opens and closes the internal connections when desired by the user. The electric power is given to the common terminal and this gives the required force to the spring, which then, drives the whole system.

You Can Find Them At Many Places because:

  • They are of many types and can be found in many places. Each type is different with a different design set for a different purpose.

  • They are mainly operable in areas requiring security as they are small as well as effective. They are very reliable in nature and hence they are commonly found in security measures.

  • They are very cost-effective and hence, can be found in many appliances so as to reduce the manufacturing cost and save the manufacturer from many hassles.

  • They carry a small amount of current and work at low voltages. Hence, they are present in places which have less electrical or at places where electricity needs to be saved. Also, many of our appliances use these switches as they work at low electricity.

  • They can open, close, or shut the internal circuit and this makes it quite effective. This prevents a machine from turning itself on or closing its doors (it if has doors) when a person is present. Hence, elevators have much use for such switches.

  • What is The Extent of Their Life?

The extent of the lives of such switches, ie, the duration for which they are operable, is measured in millions of cycles. This is applicable in most cases.

But, the consumer-friendly products and industrial products have a difference when it comes to the type of micro switch they contain.

The industry-standard products have micro switches that are heavy-duty and the consumer products come with light-duty switches. But this does not create a hassle because these switches are so cost-effective, they can be changed or upgraded to switches with higher life expectancy.

Common Places Where They Have The Most Use:

As said above, they can be used in industrial tools as well as common appliances due to their cost-effective nature and reliability.

These switches are very sensitive in nature. A little bit of force and off they go. This makes them applicable to industries. Often, they can be seen attached to industrial control units or devices that measure the rate of flow of air or other gaseous mixtures through the required system.

They are used in a microwave oven, which requires the opening and closing of doors as described above, vending machines, elevators door interlocks, or other security systems.

Hence, micro switches are small, but they make an integral part of any appliance and have to be bought with from reliable sources.
