When you decide to either buy or build a new computer, you want to make sure that it is protected and secure once it is up and running. There are a few pieces of software that I consider a must have. They include a real tie antivirus protector, a secure and fast web browser and an IP filtering program that stops people monitoring your activity and acts like a firewall.

1. Avast

Avast is a free antivirus program, it scans in real time and keeps your computer protected no matter what you are doing. It will protect you from all kinds of malware and viruses. You can receive free updates daily and schedule a scan to run at any time.

2. Google Chrome

Google Chrome is an internet browser that brings simplicity and speed to your computer, when searching the internet. There are thousands of add-ons you can get and install as well as hundreds of themes and colours to customise the looks how you want.

3. Peerblock

Peerblock is a free program that runs in the background of you computer and uses lists to block any unwanted IP addresses from connecting to your computer. You can get different lists for different purposes, ones to stop educational IP addresses, government, anti P2P, spyware and malware and also known hackers. Peerblock is also useful for use as a firewall, although it has no smart capability, it can block known spyware servers and hackers from ever entering you computer or downloading anything to it.
