What Are Microswitches and Their Pros?

WHAT IS MICRO SWITCH?

A micro switch is a great revolution in the area of electrical switches. Synonymously known as the snap action switch, it does what its name proclaims. It analyses the environmental changes.

HOW DOES IT WORK?

WORKING OF THE SWITCH

Accordingly, it responds to the changes by turning on or off in order to restrain an electrical appliance. It automatically snaps to action in response to changes as opposed to normal. If it experiences something out of the normal, it snaps to action to open or close a circuit by way of a plunger.

TIPPING POINT MECHANISM

However, to actualize the opening or closing of the circuit, the plunger actuator must have a strong force thrust upon it. It works along the lines of a tipping point mechanism. When the alteration is too out of order, the micro switch snaps into action in response to very little physical force.

COMPONENTS OF A MICRO SWITCH

A typical micro switch comprises a plunger actuator or an extra actuator. While a plunger actuator switches the contact style, the extra actuator perceives anything out of the ordinary like the fluid level or air flow.

PLUNGER: AT A GLANCE

If you plan on buying a micro switch, then you have the option of many different styles of the plunger. The designs are fundamental to the structure of the micro switch. One must choose a micro switch depending upon the plunger preferences.

TYPES OF PLUNGER DESIGNS

Some of the varying designs of the plunger are as follows:

  1. Sail Actuator (also known as Paddle Actuator),

  2. Leaf Actuator,

  3. Styrene Float Actuator,

  4. Whisker Actuator and

  5. Roller actuator.

HOW ARE THEY DESIGNED?

BASIC MECHANISM

A typical microswitch comprises of a spring that supports a stiff strip of metal. The metal strip flips back on the application of enough force to the switch button. Furthermore, the metal strip flips back on the subsequent decrease of force to the switch button. This automatically points to the higher necessary activation force as opposed to the necessary deactivation force.

The click sound generated as a result of the metal strip flipping back and forth is synonymous with the sound of a mouse click.

ADVANTAGES OF USING THEM

1. RELIABILITY AND SAFETY

They are extremely reliable. They are small, compact, and have wide-ranging use. With their help, switching can occur repeatedly and that too at different positions. The same cannot be said for other switches. Their reliability makes them extremely useful in safety appliances.

2. DURABILITY

Further, while the small and compact body may give the opinion of fragility, the microswitches are durable. A top-notch micro switch manufactured by a good company can last up to 10 million cycles.

3. COST-EFFECTIVE

Also, they are relatively inexpensive. When bought in bulk, they are extremely cheap. Who wouldn’t want a safe, reliable, durable, and inexpensive alternative for their use? They are thus, a very serviceable component of the electrical arena.
