The Office of the Auditor General has stated that the National Payment Gateway could not come into operation even after paying 95.87 percent of the contract amount.

In the 58th report of the Auditor General, it has been mentioned that a payment agreement of Rs.

The report said, “Even though the project was taken forward in coordination with Nepal Rastra Bank for the operation of the payment gateway, the gateway has not come into operation even after three years of the agreement and 95.87 percent of the contract points have been paid.”

Due to this, there is a risk of expiration of warranty, guarantee, license period and date of use.

Although the budget for the past few years has included the issue of bringing the National Payment Gateway into operation every year, it has not been able to come into operation in reality.

The talk that the National Information Technology Center will bring the National Payment Gateway into operation from last August is limited to gossip. Even after one year of operation, there is no decision yet.

What is National Payment Gateway?

Payment gateways are an important infrastructure for online payments. Various online e-commerce sites are now doing business in the market. Banks are working in different ways and online payment service providers are working in coordination with different agencies.

The concept of National Payment Gateway has been introduced to make it easier and simpler and more reliable to make payments related to the government without having to rely on multiple agencies.

Mobile service providers, commercial banks and government agencies will be affiliated to the National Payment Gateway. In this, NRB will monitor and supervise and National Information Center will look after the technical aspects including privacy and security.
