Confusion in FiveG test, Telecommunications Authority’s decision

Although the Nepal Telecommunications Authority has announced that it will start testing FiveG this year, there is confusion over its technical aspects.

The two most important aspects required for a FiveG test are frequency and equipment. NEA and the Ministry of Communications and Information Technology have not been able to decide on how to manage these two issues.

The ministry has not been able to decide which bandwidth frequency to use for FiveG.
As per the earlier decision of the government to conduct FiveG test from Nepal Telecom, the telco has already submitted the test plan to the authority.

The study committee formed to test FiveG has decided how to test, on which frequencies, on which sites, how to do it, which application to run.

The regulatory body and the taluk ministry have not yet decided which frequency to use. After determining the frequency, the equipment has to be imported accordingly. The manufacturer determines the equipment and other technical issues based on the frequency determined by Nepal.

After importing the equipment for testing at great expense, if it cannot be used, it cannot be returned. Therefore, it is doubtful whether the device will be used properly as it is not possible to determine which band frequency is suitable in Nepal.

Speaking at a press meet on Monday, Managing Director of Nepal Telecom, Dilliram Adhikari, said that the goods would arrive only after the first frequency was determined for the FiveG test. No manufacturing company has to make goods just for Nepal and Nepal has to place orders for testing.

He said that Nepal does not have a policy to export goods if the frequency does not work well.
The Global System for Mobile Communications Association (GSMA) says below 30 GHz is not good for Fiji.

Internationally, there are three bands for FiveG. There are lower bands below one GHz, mid bands above one GHz and high bands above 24 GHz.
Nepal Telecom has said that in the context of Nepal, it will be effective to run FiveG in combination with lower band and mid band.

No matter how many FiveG systems are running now, their spectrum is 3400 MHz band and 2600 MHz band. 700 MHz is very low.

In the case of Nepal, the Ministry has not been able to take a decision even though it has been estimated that it would be more effective to run FiveG in the 700, 342600 MHz band.

NEA has said that 700 MHz and 2.6 GHz bands can be used for the FiveG test.
The FiveG is being tested in India in the 700 MHz, 3.3-3.6 GHz and 24.25-28.5 GHz bands.

The infrastructure for the FiveG test should have an optical link of 10G up to BTS. Space and power system should be available in the tower.

Everyone should be ready to run any application for FiveG. Also, the core side should be prepared.
FiveG’s Active Antenna Unit (AAU) should be brought but it will be brought after the frequency is finalized.
