Directs the government to investigate the printing of smart licenses

The Development and Technology Committee under the House of Representatives has directed the Ministry of Physical Infrastructure and Transport to investigate the delay in the distribution and printing of smart driver’s licenses and take necessary action.

The committee has also directed the ministry to reconsider the decision to impose a 20-year time limit on vehicles.

The directive was given at a meeting held at the committee’s office in Singha Durbar on Wednesday. Committee Chairperson Kalyani Kumari Khadka informed that the government has been instructed to investigate the reasons behind the delay in distribution and printing of smart driver’s licenses and take necessary action.

Khadka said that the committee was of the view that it would be appropriate to allow the operation of vehicles that are suitable by conducting a mechanical test of the vehicle by setting a standard rather than banning the operation of vehicles on the basis of a 20-year time limit.

Similarly, the meeting has demanded the government to take action against the bidders for the management of smart driver’s license.

Committee members Ganesh Kumar Pahadi, Kedar Sigdel, Sanjay Kumar Gautam and others said that the program was not successful due to distribution of smart driver’s license and installation of embossed number plates on vehicles without necessary preparations and infrastructure.

Secretary at the Ministry of Physical Infrastructure and Transport, Rabindranath Shrestha, expressed the view that the delay in the arrival of smart cards may be due to lack of technical knowledge on the subject.

Namaraj Ghimire, Director General of the Department of Transport Management, said that English language was being used in all the countries where embossed number plates were implemented. Gaerkhapatra
