Kathmandu. Finland's Julius Kivimaki, once known as the most notorious hacker in Europe, has been jailed. He was sentenced to 6 years and 3 months imprisonment by a district court there for hacking a psychiatric center in Finland and stealing the therapy records of 33,000 patients.
He hacked the data of the mental health center (therapy company) in 2018 when he was 20 years old. After that, he demanded a ransom of 400,000 euros more from the center. But after the company refused to pay the ransom, Kivimaki started emailing thousands of patients asking for 200 euros per person.
They even threatened to put their confidential therapy notes and personal details online if the patients did not pay the money. Not only this, the data was also found on the dark web, which is said to have been done by him. A patient even committed suicide after his personal details were leaked online By the BBC stated.
This was not the first time Kivimaki, known online as 'ransom_man', hacked. Before that, he had gained fame by hacking gaming platforms like PlayStation Network, Xbox. At that time, he was only 13 years old. Based on that, he spent his teenage years only in hacking.
The biggest hacking he did was in a psychiatric center. However, the Finnish police could not identify and arrest him. After hacking, Kivima went to France to delete the evidence. The Finnish authorities asked Interpol for help in arresting him.
Finally, he was arrested by the French police in February 2023 after three years while hiding in Paris in the same hacking case. It has been found that he used a fake name and documents to live in France at that time.
