Whether you’re a yoga enthusiast or need new pants for the gym, your favorite leggings will cycle through your washer plenty of times.

Lululemon is also one of the few brands that create high-performing leggings for active women. That’s why it’s important to learn how to wash Lululemon leggings without damaging their material or elasticity.

What’s the best way to keep your gym leggings looking their best?Keep this guide handy for laundry day.

Handwashing vs. Machine Washing

If you’re worried about damaging your leggings, traditional handwashing is a good way to avoid possible damage from your washer. Unless your leggings have loose hems and elastic, your pants should do just fine in the washer. Plus, you can always choose a gentle wash setting if you’re concerned.

Handwashing is also great if you want to conserve water. Washing leggings alone in the washer is a big waste of water. Otherwise, wait until laundry day.

If you recently washed your leggings, hand washing is great for spot cleaning. You can always buy a spot-cleaning stick from your favorite detergent brand. A little lemon essential oil can help too.

Remember to fix the waist and hemline first if the hems and elastic are loosening from normal wear and tear. Close any open zippers and velcro before washing too.
Use a detergent formulated for cold washing. Lululemon leggings are made from LYCRA material. Both Wisk and Tide make detergents specially formulated for cold cycles.

Whether you’re handwashing or machine washing, only wash your leggings with similar materials, like other leggings, sports tops, and other apparel made from synthetic fabrics. You may want to avoid washing your leggings with cotton fibers that may stick to your pants after the wash.

Create a separate hand washing bath to rinse out your leggings. Gently wring dry your leggings without overstretching the fabrics. Once you’ve squeezed out as much water as possible, lay your leggings on a flat surface to dry.

You can hang dry your leggings too, but drying them flat on a table helps preserve the shape of your leggings.

How to Wash Lululemon Leggings in a Washing Machine

These leggings require a cold wash cycle.

When doing a load of laundry, you can wash your leggings with delicate fabrics. If your leggings are dark, you can also wash them with other dark (or bright) colors as these garments do better in cold water. Cold water prevents dye bleeding, which is important to know with your leggings’ first wash.

Always check your leggings’ label before washing, as your pants could require an even gentler wash, depending on the material.

A typical cold wash cycle ranges between 60 degrees and 80 degrees Fahrenheit. You may want to start with the lowest temperature for the first wash. Turn your pants inside-out for best results, too.

One of the best parts about washing Lululemon leggings is that you don’t need fabric softeners. These leggings are comfortable and ready to wear once dried. Plus, fabric softener can damage the LYCRA fabricleaving behind a stubborn coating on the surface.

Material types can vary with different leggings, but all Lululemon pants are made with synthetic “technical” sports fabric, which means they should all be washed on cold, gentle wash cycles.

All leggings should be flat dried or hang dried, preferably. However, if you’re in a rush, you may opt for a gentle, low-temperature tumble dry in your dryer.

Avoid using too much detergent and stick to the lowest recommended amount for your load. Too much detergent may affect certain water-repellant Lululemon garments over time.

Avoid drying your leggings on hot (or even medium) temperature cycles. This mistake can shrink your leggings too much, especially after the first wash and dry.

You don’t have to flat dry them, but at least hang dry them to avoid shrinkage. Hotter temperatures may impact the LYCRA, as well; it’s always best to follow the label’s wash instructions.

If you wear your leggings to the gym a lot you can freshen them up in the dryer. Just add a few drops of lavender oil to a paper towel and toss it in the laundry load with your leggings. Remember to keep the dryer setting on a cool, low tumble dry.

How to Mineral Wash Leggings

Do you want to add a cool, weathered, or multicolored look to your leggings?

A mineral wash is also known by its classic name, “acid wash.”

It’s a process where leggings are washed with bleach, but not in the way you think.

Instead, you wash the leggings with foam blocks or shapes that have been sprayed with bleach, a bleaching agent. You can also use stones that have been saturated in bleach.

As they sit in the bath, rub the leggings between the stones for a few minutes. Let everything sit for about 10 minutes before rinsing and drying your leggings.

Don’t use this method unless you want to create a mineral wash look on your leggings.

Washing Mistakes to Avoid

Since Lululemon leggings aren’t like your everyday t-shirt, you have to be mindful of common washing mistakes, like shrinkage, bleeding, and surface damage.

You already learned about how important cold water cycles are for leggings, except these items have more specialized fabrics, which makes laundry separation even more important.

Avoid washing your leggings with the following garments:

  • Scratchy wooly winter coats
  • Shoes
  • Corduroy pants
  • Woven items
  • Belts and buckles
  • Hats
  • Jean jackets

What do the above items have in common?

They all have some type of abrasive material. These materials can damage your leggings’ LYCRA coating if they come in contact with them in the washer or dryer.

The above challenges make an important point about detergent, as well. Along with buying cold water detergent, stick to liquid detergent only. Power detergent can be too abrasive for sports leggings, as well as scrubbing brushes.

Be extra mindful when removing small stainstoo.

It’s tempting to scrub too hard when removing a stain, but this mistake can damage the technical fabric of your leggings. Instead, use a soft washcloth, add a drop of detergent, and cool water, pressing the cloth onto the stain. Gently rub on the stain in circular motions until you’ve removed as much of it as you can.

Avoid dry cleaning your leggings, as this method can be too hard on LYCRA material, as well. Never use bleach when cleaning your leggings, either.
