IMEI registration boosts ‘mobile sales’

IMEI registration boosts ‘mobile sales’

Nepal Telecommunication Authority has been implementing mobile device management system since July 20. After the implementation of this system, the IMEI number of all mobiles entering Nepal should be registered.

If not registered, such mobiles will not work. The initiative to register IMEI number has been started for a long time.

In particular, the import of mobile phones by evading customs has led to unhealthy competition in the market, said the businessman. Mobile phones brought by evading customs are sold cheaply.

For this reason, the businessmen demanded that unregistered mobiles should not be allowed to be sold. If someone brought it from abroad in person, they had to register after coming to Nepal.

The Nepal Telecommunications Authority, the regulatory body, has been implementing the Mobile Management System (MDMS) system since Friday.

This means that mobiles will no longer be imported without registration at the customs and if they come without registration, they will not be able to operate with a SIM.

Entrepreneurs say that this has had a big impact on the market since the announcement of unregistered mobile phones. He says this has also increased mobile sales in the market.

Deepak Malhotra, president of the Mobile Phone Importers Association of Nepal, said that the implementation of MDMS has affected the market since the day after the budget speech.

“Mobile sales have been on the rise since its announcement,” said Malhotra. He said that mobile sales have improved a lot in recent times.

He says it started well. In the past, there were many people who would buy cheap mobile bills in the ‘gray market’. He said that the number of people buying mobile phones has increased after the message that mobile phones without bills are not registered and this could cause problems later.

Consumers are afraid to buy gray market mobiles as the message is well received in the market this time. When buying mobiles in the gray market, it does not appear that the mobiles brought by certain importers have been sold.

They have started buying only with the bill as they have got the opportunity to understand that buying a phone without a bill is not registered. He is confident that MDMS will be implemented as soon as the market is affected.

The team, including Malhotra, had been enforcing the rule for a long time. He is confident that the rule will start in full swing in two to three months from July 1.

“We are in talks with the authority,” Malhotra said. “I am confident that it will not be fully implemented from tomorrow and will be fully implemented in a few months.”

Talking to NEA, he said that it has been completed in two months starting from July 20. “They have given us two months to fully implement it,” Malhotra said. “Even if it is fully implemented after two months, we have no problem.”

Union vice-president Sanjay Agrawal is also in favor of implementing MDMS this time. This will benefit both the mobile market and the government.

“30-40 percent of the mobiles imported to Nepal come from illegal sources. There is no such thing now, ‘Agrawal told ICT News.’ Once the system is implemented, the sales of mobile importers will definitely increase. ‘

According to him, mobile phones worth Rs 8 to 9 billion are still coming to the country illegally. Mobile phones worth Rs 30 billion are being imported annually through legal channels.

He says that stopping the large number of illegal mobile phones will help in the revenue collection of the country.

‘Stopping illegal mobiles will help the state in tax collection. If there is an increase in customs, the VAT bill will also be higher, ‘he said.’ It has a double benefit. ‘

He says that the Mobile Importers Association is working closely with the authority to implement MDMS. Therefore, he is confident that this system will be implemented from July 20.

“It may take another month or two for some technical reasons to be fully implemented,” he said.

Agrawal is of the opinion that this system should be implemented anyway. “A genuine customer gets genuine goods and it also helps prevent crime,” he says.

Agarwal believes that many crimes from stolen mobiles have increased and such crimes will also decrease after the implementation of this system. He said that all the organizations should shoulder their responsibilities and make the mobile device management system completely successful.

Due to the ban, international flights have been affected and additional equipment for the system has not arrived. The Nepal Telecommunication Authority (NTAA) is preparing to start the system from July 1 with some of the already arrived equipment.

According to NEA, this system will be fully implemented after 1-2 months. NEA is launching mobile device management system from the National Information Technology Center from July 20. For which hardware and software have been installed in the center.
