In the postal crisis, the use of new technology has halved in three years

The recent development of information and communication technology globally has put the traditional means of communication in the postal crisis.

Post offices, once the only means of communication in Nepal, are now dilapidated due to lack of business. The number of letters and parcels sent from it is decreasing every year.
According to the Auditor General’s 59th Annual Report, the use of postal service in the country has declined by 56 percent in the last three years.

According to the statistics, the number of general, registry, insurance, parcel, book post and other goods exchanged in the country in 2019 BS was 33.4 million. That is, the number of parcels were exchanged.

This number has dropped to 25.33 million in 2018. Compared to the previous year, the exchange of goods in that year has decreased by 24 percent to 8.17 million.

Similarly, the number of postal exchanges has doubled next year. In 2019, the number of people exchanging goods by post has reached 14.48 million.

Compared to 2018, this number is 14.4 million 82 thousand less. In other words, the use of postal service has decreased by 42.83 percent in one year.

Compared to three years ago, the number of postal use in 2019 has decreased by 56 percent. If we continue to use the postal service like this every year, it seems that its use will stop in a few years.

The postal service is declining every year. With the development of technology in the field of information and communication and the private sector also operating letter, parcel and courier services, the scope of work of the government postal service is becoming competitive.

The Accountant General has suggested that the traditional postal service should be diversified, expanded and made reliable in the face of increasing use of information technology. For this, it is necessary to make necessary policy, legal and institutional reforms to make it competitive, professional, technological and modern. In order to use it, new methods have to be adopted, new technology has to be used.

Postal Savings Bank was not effective

Goshwara and District Post Office 68 are operating the Postal Savings Bank. These banks have a balance of Rs 1.58 billion at the end of this year.

According to the accountant general, the postal savings bank is not fully accountable in software, business results are increasing every year, employees in some districts have misappropriated funds, and the ministry has stopped investing in Jajarkot and other districts.

Although the report on last year’s report mentioned the need to review the operation of the savings bank, it has been mentioned that the situation is still the same.
