Social network Viber has been listed in the Ministry of Communication and Information Technology. Viber has been listed in Nepal according to the 2080 guidelines for regulating the use of social networks.

Ramesh Pandey, Deputy Secretary of the Ministry of Communication and Information Technology and Social Media Management Unit Coordinator, said that Viber has been listed as per the social media guidelines. 'So far Viber has been listed in Nepal. Viber has already received the listing,' Pandey told ICT news, 'Other social networks are also in the process of listing.'

Last November, the government introduced the Guideline 2080 for regulating the use of social networks with the aim of regulating social networks. According to the directive, it is arranged that the person, company or organization who wants to operate a social media platform should register with the ministry.

According to this arrangement, Viber has been listed and LinkedIn, Snap Chat are also in the process of listing. He said that since some documents were insufficient in the application given by LinkedIn and Snap Chat for listing, they were requested to provide more necessary documents. “If the documents are received, they will also be registered,” he said.

There is a provision that previously operating social media platforms should be listed in the ministry within 3 months. But so far only Viber has been listed. It has been mentioned in the guidelines that the Ministry can prohibit the operation of social media platforms that are not listed in Nepal.

Similarly, on Tuesday, the Asia Internet Coalition (NIC) requested the Ministry of Communication and Information Technology to ban the registration of social media platforms in Nepal until the social media bill is finalized.

Accepting the efforts of the Nepal government to regulate social media platforms, it has requested to block the registration of social media platforms due to dissatisfaction with some provisions.

Pandey informed that the legitimate suggestions of the Asia Internet Coalition have been addressed in the Social Media Bill and the process of further amending the draft Bill has proceeded.
