Mobile IMEI must be registered within two months, SIM card cannot be used without registration

Mobile users will have to register their mobile IMEI within the next two months.

The decision was taken at a meeting convened by Secretary to the Prime Minister and Office of the Council of Ministers Shishir Kumar Dhungana on Tuesday to manage the use of Mobile Device Management System (MDMS), which the government is preparing to implement for illegal mobile control.

The meeting, which also included representatives of the Nepal Telecommunications Authority, the Customs Department and the Mobile Importers Association, also decided to send SMS to users to register their mobiles within two months.

The meeting has also decided to keep the server of MDMS by September 30 to keep statistics of imported mobiles.

Similarly, the meeting has also decided to link NEA with the Nepal National Single Window of the Customs Department within a month for the import permission of mobile services.

Preparations were made to bring MDMS into operation under NEA saying that revenue leakage and security challenge has increased due to illegally imported mobiles.

Accordingly, the government had made it mandatory to register mobile phones within the current fiscal year 2078/79 BS.

Although the registration process is still going on, some work of MDMS system is still pending. Especially mobiles brought from abroad should be registered in the system. Mobile users who have purchased VAT within Nepal do not have to register. Gorkhapatra
