‘My Second Teacher’: Nepal’s Education on Cambridge Platform (Video)

Launching ‘My Second Teacher’ on April 1, Sulabh Budhathoki was saying that technology must be brought together if the country’s education system is to be comprehensively reformed.

We must learn from technology-based education, just as the West kissed Mount Everest. If education is provided in the mountainous region where books are delivered on mules, quality education can be imparted even if it is difficult.

That was the thinking of Sulabh.

In a country like Nepal where there is unequal education (geographically and between private and government), how can quality education be provided equally?

He was looking for such a platform, which would provide quality education to the students and ample educational materials to the teachers.

Meanwhile, Cambridge School in Singapore was designing the ‘My Second Teacher’ platform.

He knew, ‘It’s a very high level learning system. It is spreading all over the world. ‘

“Then why not bring it to Nepal as well?” He thought. “It would be wonderful to bring this world-class education system to Nepal.”

He proposed at the Cambridge School in Singapore: ‘We design the course at our own expense. We had to provide this platform without paying royalties or for a very low fee. ‘

He also proposed to make it available free of cost in community schools in Nepal.

He also proposed that its ‘operation center’ should be in Nepal.

Cambridge School looked at the past of the ING Group. He has worked in the field of education for 20 years. There were IT colleges and skilled manpower to work. “After seeing this, Cambridge School in Singapore has decided to give it to Nepal,” he says.

As he thought, he would get the world famous ‘Digital Learning Platform’ which is also suitable for Nepal.

It has been a month since ‘My Second Teacher’ was officially launched in Nepal, which has been implemented in 18 countries of the world and is reaching 50 countries this year.

This is a very short time for this project which started with a long vision.

But in the meantime, Sulabh is very excited about the response he has received from ‘My Second Teacher’.

Students, teachers, and parents have shown great interest. The government is also closely monitoring the project.
“There has been a very good response from students, teachers, parents and educational institutions,” Sulabh told ICT News. “It is an inspiration that can be implemented successfully.”

The number of customers in a month has also made him optimistic. The number of students who become customers of My Second Teacher in one month has reached around 20,000.

He considers it a great success. Currently, only 4 subjects of class 10 are available on this platform.
Her team went to community schools for pilot testing. Discussions were held in five schools of Sunwal Municipality of Nawalparasi before the lockdown.

“There’s been a great response from students and teachers,” says Sulabh. “Students and teachers seem to be excited if they have a good course.”

Teachers have responded that it is easier to explain to the students from My Second Teacher.
The concerned ministry will also provide assistance. He has received a commitment to help beyond the discussion with the Minister of Education.

Similarly, there have been many meetings with Pabson and NPabson. There has been a good response from those bodies as well.
He hopes that this will improve education in Nepal. He sees this as bridging the gap between private schools and the community.

On the other hand, it will make a significant contribution to job creation in the country. More than 300 people are currently working on this project. He says that even during the lockdown period, more than 100 new advertisements were opened.

“By 2024, we need at least 5,000 manpower,” he says. “Our goal is to reach 10,000.”
After this opportunity, Sulabh says that his team is working 18-19 hours every day.

What is ‘My Second Teacher?’

My Second Teacher is a platform that can be read online. Designed by academics from the world famous Cambridge School, Singapore.

This learning method has been applied in Cambridge schools. According to Sulabh, about one lakh students are studying in 18 countries so far and this year it is reaching 50 countries.

Yes, this is the world famous ‘Digital Teaching and Learning Platform’ My Second Teacher. Developed by Cambridge School, the platform is brought to Nepal by ING Group and Innovative Tech.

Nepal’s course is designed by Sulabh’s team. Educational materials are being designed according to the curriculum of the Curriculum Development Center (CDC).

In other words, the course is designed for students in Nepal, said Sulabh. After six months of preparation, it was made public in Nepal on April 20.

The language used in it is also colloquial. The course is designed by mixing both English and Nepali language so that all the students can understand.

At present, only four subjects of English, Mathematics, Science and Economics have been designed for class ten, but all the courses of class 6, 7, 8, 9, 11 and 12 are being prepared till next year.

Not only for Nepal, they are also sending Cambridge English course containers from here.
“Let’s read with a smile, not with a smile,” he said. “It makes it easier for teachers to teach.” If there is any confusion while reading, live discussion can be held with the teacher.

It has ample training and educational materials for students as well as teachers.

It is designed to be taught based on the student’s personal exhibition. It is easy to understand the results that the student or the school as a whole can bring in the examination. Parents can also test their children’s reading.

“20 years of experience says we have some missing parts in the education sector,” says Sulabh. “Our study shows that the curriculum is a major factor.”

The first step to improve education is the teaching style, then the teacher.

It is customary to blame the teacher for not getting good results. Many parents complain that students do not pass because the teacher does not teach well. It is easy to change the way you think.

While blaming the teachers, what kind of educational materials have we given them? When have we thought of helping them? Have we provided alternative methods? It is important to think about that.

While blaming the teachers, what kind of educational materials have we given them? When have we thought of helping them? Have we provided alternative methods? It is important to think about that.

Teachers are obliged to complete the course every year.

Another thing, we have been hearing complaints for years that ‘teaching learning content’ is traditional and not practical. Even in our Himalayan schools, books do not arrive on time.

“In such a situation, can we give a world-class education?” Sulabh asks. “Now is the time for us to think seriously.”

Sulabh believes that technology-based education should be used to solve such problems in the education system. Sulabh says it is easier to provide internet-based education in the Himalayan district than to deliver books on mules.

“Without the inclusion of technology, a comprehensive improvement in Nepal’s education is not possible,” he said.

‘Developed countries are doing just that. Why are we lagging behind, ‘he says.

How to take my second teacher ?

As the education level of Nepal and Singapore cannot be compared, Sulabh says that the model has been prepared in such a way that it can be operated according to the situation of Nepal.

It is running from mobile app and website in other countries including Singapore. In Nepal, it has started in a new way.

The first way to use MySecondTeacher is ‘Nepal.mysecondTeacher.com’. There is no initial charge for using it.

You can experience it for a while and then if you feel good, you can become a customer.

Another medium is the mobile app. The My Second Teacher app is available on both iOS and Android mobiles. You can also become its customer from there.

Even so, the Internet has not reached our villages. Even if it reaches, it is not of good quality. To solve this problem, the display unit in community education has been designed to teach all classes.

It also needs internet but does not need the same speed as a website or app.

A company from Singapore, Acer and My Second Teacher Nepal are studying to make a display unit that can run on the internet without internet or very low speed. This model is being prepared in the summer.

After that, it can be taught in schools in rural areas through the projector or TV of the display unit.

How much does it cost?

Sulabh says that the customer fee has been made cheaper so that everyone can use it along with easy availability for the students.

This course is very expensive at Cambridge School, Singapore. One subject costs a hundred dollars, says Sulabh.

“It would not have been possible if we had tried to offer a Nepali course by bringing a franchise from the business model,” he says.

He said that it was possible to have a cheap day in Nepal as there was an agreement to implement this course in Nepal without royalty and even if it was agreed, it would be very low.

At present there are four subjects available in English, Mathematics, Science and Economics. These issues have been fixed at Rs 1,870 in a three-month package. In Singapore, he said, he was charged डलर 400 for nine months for the same four subjects.
The fee has now been initially tested and they plan to review it.

“Tomorrow this price may not be paid by the students studying in government or community schools,” says Sulabh. “We are bringing a separate package for that.”

They were also preparing to make the price of the government school public. Meanwhile, the lockdown has stopped after it started.

“We are keeping the price very low,” said Sulabh. “Our goal is to contribute more to education than to make money.”

Government support

It is not possible for the private sector alone to improve the education system. Government and other concerned bodies also need to support it.

Sulabh has also discussed with the government about My Second Teacher. This can be a great help when the government is running various programs called education for all.

Sulabh says that if the government helps in the construction of infrastructure, the students, teachers and parents will be greatly relieved. He has already met the Education Minister and discussed about this.

He hopes the government would at least provide electricity and internet to schools in rural areas. They have also urged the local government to make lights, internet and display items.

In the meantime, they also went to the local level to discuss. He went to Sunwal Municipality and had discussions with schools, mayors, deputy mayors and ward chairpersons.

“They have said that education should be the first priority and infrastructure should be built,” Sulabh said. “Instead, they have said that they should invest in it even if the road is reduced by three kilometers.”

There is a lot of inequality in education in the country. First, there is a huge gap between public and private schools. Another thing is that students who have passed class 12 or graduation do not develop skills at all. As a result, they are forced to go to the Gulf countries without efficiency.

It is believed that such gaps will be reduced by implementing the same world class course for students of government and private schools.

According to Sulabh, the aim of this course is to address such inequalities and gaps in education. Because of this, the government is confident that it will help.

It is believed that such gaps will be reduced by implementing the same world class course for students of government and private schools.

In addition, teachers in private and public schools will be able to use the same educational materials. Teachers can keep and share their content.

Cambridge has developed a platform for everyone through much study and research. It is believed that a new dimension will be added to the current education system in Nepal if it can be adopted from all sectors.
