Nepal Telecom is planning to import around 80 lakh eSIM in Nepal by the next fiscal year. It has included plans to bolster the eSIM platform in Nepal in the budget for FY 2078/2079. In this post, we will be discussing the key features of eSIM and its implementation in Nepal.

What is eSIM?

eSIM or eUICC (Embedded Universal Circuit Card) differs from the regular sim cards as it is embedded into the smartphone. Thus, you can’t remove or replace it. However, you can rewrite the information on the sim. With this, you no longer have to change the physical sim when you want to switch to a network operator. In this case, eSIM will helps you authenticate your detail with the new operator.

Advantage of eSIM:

  • Easier to switch network operator
  • Supports dual-sim connectivity
  • Takes up less space than traditional sim cards

Disadvantages of eSIM:

  • Switching smartphones is tedious
  • e-sims can not be removed

Compatible Devices

Most flagship phones are eSIM compatible, including the ones from Samsung, Apple, Huawei, and Google. Brands even include it on their high-end smartwatches. Galaxy Watch 3 and Apple Watch Series 6 are the latest smartwatches from Samsung and Apple, respectively, and both are e-sim compliant.

eSIM implementation by Nepal Telecom

Nepal Telecom will the first carrier to allow eSIm connection in Nepal. It is planning to import around 80 lakh eSIM in Nepal in the upcoming fiscal year. NT has already determined a tender for 75 lakh e-sim. The remaining e-sims will be brought as per the requirement.

For this, NT needs to have a working eSIM platform. Though NT has not specified the exact amount, it has already allocated a budget for the project. It is yet not clear if it will purchase a third-party solution or built one from the ground up. If everything goes well, eSIM in Nepal will be a reality from next year.
