Now 20 Mbps internet service will be available at all local levels

Now, 20 Mbps internet service will be available at all local levels. The Telecommunication Authority of Nepal (TAN) said in a press release on Tuesday that it would provide 20 Mbps unedited internet service to all local levels, ward offices, community health institutions and community secondary schools.

In line with the goal of building smart districts under the Digital Nepal Campaign in the field of information and technology, the work of extending broadband internet service to every village settlement has been initiated in coordination with the local levels.

As the internet service is essential, the Nepal Telecommunication Authority (NTAA) has started the work in collaboration with the local levels as per the concept of Communications and Information Technology Minister Parbat Gurung under the campaign to make the expansion of internet in Nepal inclusive and accessible everywhere.

According to the proposal of the Ministry of Communications and Information Technology, the meeting of the Council of Ministers of the Government of Nepal on January 12 will provide access to internet service to all community basic schools in all 74 districts except Kathmandu Valley.

In addition, broadband internet service will be extended to the earthquake affected districts by increasing the capacity of the internet connected to it.

In the first phase of the program, a campaign has been launched to extend internet service to the government service centers in every village of Kavrepalanchok, Nuwakot, Rasuwa, Sindhupalchowk, Dolakha, Sindhuli, Okhaldhunga and Ramechhap.

In collaboration with 76 local levels of the eight districts, agreements are being signed with the local levels to move the work forward.

According to the decision of the Government of Nepal on the initiative of Minister Parbat Gurung, the program has been brought to provide access to broadband service to all government service centers at the local level within three months from the date of the agreement to fill the gap of digital divide in urban and rural areas of Nepal.

The service will be available free of cost for 2 years after internet connection. In the following years, these organizations will have to renew themselves and bring the service into regular operation.

NEA has also launched a campaign to build an information highway. Under the campaign, the Government of Nepal has included internet service as an essential service.
