Qualcomm Snapdragon 888 Pro Rumors, Leaks, Availability

Right now, Snapdragon 888 is the go-to chipset for Android brands looking to make a flagship smartphone. However, according to recent reports, Qualcomm is developing a Pro variant of the chip less than six months since the release of the standard triple-8. Here, Qualcomm Snapdragon 888 Pro is reportedly under testing and we could see smartphones powered by it in the near future.

Snapdragon 888 Pro Rumors Roundup:

The rumor comes from Digital Chat Station, who is a prominent leakster in the Wiebo community. He is mainly known for leaks surrounding Xiaomi and other Chinese brands. He was among the first to suggest that the Mi 11 and the Galaxy S21 lineup will be the first devices with Snapdragon 888 in the Chinese and global market respectively. Now, he is suggesting that Snapdragon 888 Pro is already being tested by some of the Chinese manufacturers.

Overclocked Snapdragon 888?

As of now, we don’t know how the Pro model will differ from the standard Snapdragon 888. But if the past trend is anything to go by, the Pro could simply be an overclocked version. Usually, when the production process matures, chip manufacturers can manufacture chips more efficiently.

Qualcomm takes advantage of this by overclocking the Prime core on its flagship offering and releasing it as a Plus variant of the same. So, the Snapdragon 888 Pro could come with the Cortex-X1 core with a higher frequency than 2.84 GHz. The other cores are more likely to retain their original frequencies.

How wise of a decision will it be?

On the other hand, tech enthusiasts are skeptical about overclocking the Cortex-X1 core on the Snapdragon 888 Pro. For starters, Cortex-X1 is reportedly causing the Snapdragon 888 chip to overheat. The problem has been reported in a number of Android flagships of this year including the OnePlus 9 Pro.

Qualcomm Snapdragon 888 Pro Availability

According to Digital Chat Station, smartphones powered by the Snapdragon 888 Pro could hit the market starting the third quarter of this year. However, this chipset is likely to be exclusive to the Chinese market.
