Samsung M62
Samsung launched the Galaxy M62 earlier this month and it is simply a rebranded Galaxy F62 that was launched in India.
On top of that, it is the follow up to the widely popular Samsung Galaxy M51. Just like the M51, M62 brings performance at an affordable starting price of Rs. 39,999 (6/128GB).
How does it feel so far? I’ll tell you all about it in this first impressions article of the Samsung M62.

Samsung M62 Design
Samsung M62 shares the design philosophy of the Samsung M51 as it has the same body dimensions. The change comes in terms of the square-shaped camera module and pattern design on the glastic rear.
Talking about the rear panel, it is easily scratchable and is one of the major weaknesses of this smartphone.
On the other hand, it is also a thick and heavy phone just like the M51 as it measures 9.5mm thick and weighs 218 g.
Upfront it gets the same hole punch right in the middle of the screen and a side-mounted fingerprint sensor. The fingerprint sensor works well. It’s fast and reliable.
Overall, M62 doesn’t have an appealing design when compared to the likes of A52 or even the A32. But it looks okay.

Samsung M62 Display
Samsung has gone for the same 6.7 inches FHD+ Super AMOLED Plus panel on the M62 which was also used on the M51.
The screen quality is pretty good with vibrant color and good brightness. You won’t find any differences between the display of A72 and A52 when compared side by side. However, you will find one when you use it.
Yes! It is not a high refresh rate display and that is one of the places where Samsung has cut corners to make it affordable.
But is it a major factor for you to overlook the M62? I don’t think so as of now.

Samsung brings its old Exynos 9825 chipset on the Samsung M62. While the Exynos 9825 is not the best flagship chipset of its generation, it is quite a good processor for mid-range smartphones.
M62 gives you flagships grade performance when it comes to normal tasks such as browsing and navigating.
It hasn’t had a single hiccup while using multiple apps or switching between them. The phone feels smooth and slick but I’m a bit concerned about its gaming performance.
Well, it can run games pretty easily with good frame rates but the Exynos processor is not that good when it comes to sustained performance. We’ll test it out in detail in our full review.

Samsung M62 Camera
Samsung has employed the same camera setup as the M51 on the M62. It uses the same 64MP Sony IMX686 sensor, a 12MP ultrawide sensor, a 5MP macro sensor, and a 5MP depth sensor.
Similarly, it has the same 32MP sensor on the front for selfies.
64MP MAIN SENSOR
Images have good details, the colors look saturated as ever and the dynamic range looks good as well.
ULTRAWIDE, MACRO, SELFIE
Similarly, the 12MP ultrawide angle camera also performs exceptionally. You get good details and the images have a similar color profile as the main sensor. The 123-degree FOV is really great and I love how good HDR works with the ultrawide angle sensor.
I’m not impressed with its macro sensor though. The images look oversaturated and I think it is a problem in this particular review unit. The problem shall not persist in the actual retail unit. I’ll take a look at this issue in my full review.

On to the front camera, M62 can capture really good selfies with crisp details and good exposure. The HDR also works in tandem to keep the highlights under control.
Video
Likewise, M62 can capture up to 4k 30fps videos but doesn’t get the 1080p 60fps option. As for stabilization, it gets a stabilization option even on 4k. I’ll take a closer look at the camera in my full review so stay tuned for that.

Samsung M62 Ports
Just like the Samsung Galaxy M51, it has a massive 7000mAh battery along with 25W fast charging. I was easily able to use it for 1 and a half days under moderate usage. I was getting around 7+ hours of screen on time.
So far, the battery has been good. I mostly need to charge it in 2 days.
The 25W fast charging support is pretty good at this price tag. It takes almost 2 hours to charge the phone from 0 to 100.
Software
M62 runs on One UI 3.1 on top of Android 11.
My review unit is running on January 2021 update and it has not received further updates. Well, the experience is very similar to that of the M51.

It also gets swipe right to Google news which is standard on all of the latest Samsung phones. Likewise, there’s lift to wake, double-tap to turn on/turn off the screen, finger sensor gestures, etc.
Follow Up
So, Samsung Galaxy M62 looks good for the price. I have been using it for a few days now and I like it so far.
Its display and battery are its headlining features and its flagship chipset also provides good performance. However, I’m not quite sure about its thermal performance under sustained load.
