The company has already sent out invitations to the media for its next Galaxy Unpacked event which will be held at the Masonic Auditorium in San Francisco. The event was live-streamed through Samsung’s official YouTube channel at 11:45 PM (NPT) on February 1.

At the event, Samsung launched the entirety of the Galaxy S23 series, including the vanilla, Plus, and Ultra models. In addition, the company also updates its Galaxy Book lineup.

As speculated, this year’s S-series flagships are considerably more expensive than their predecessors. Except for Canada and the US, Samsung has hiked the price of the S23 series. In Nepal, the vanilla Samsung S23 and S23 Plus cost Rs. 127,999 and Rs. 151,999 respectively.

For reference, the S22 and S22+ were initially launched at Rs. 112,999 and Rs. 129,999, but they now go for Rs. 124,999 and Rs. 137,999, respectively. Samsung increased the price of these phones on multiple occasions citing increased excise duty and increasing value of the US Dollar.

Samsung Galaxy S23 Series Overview:

Design, Display

Samsung has redesigned the Galaxy S23 and S23+ taking inspiration from the S22 Ultra.  The new flagship phones now come with discrete camera bumps for each camera lens and there is no iconic Contour Cut camera design we saw on the Galaxy S21 and S22 phones.

Samsung Galaxy S23 Series Design

The main difference between the vanilla and Plus model is the screen size. You get a 6.1-inch screen on the S23 while the Plus model sports a 6.6-inch model.

That aside, you get Dynamic AMOLED 2X on both S23 and S23 Plus. They support variable refresh rates ranging from 48 – 120Hz. Both phones will have HDR10+ certification and are among the first phone to have Gorilla Glass Victus 2 protection. In addition, Samsung has bumped up the peak brightness on the S23 and S23+ to match the S23 Ultra’s 1750 nits.

Performance and Memory

There are now Exynos-powered Samsung Galaxy S23 series phones this year. The company is going all Snapdragon for its latest flagship phones.

Like the Ultra variant, Galaxy S23 and S23 Plus are powered by a custom Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 chip. The new chip bears the “Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 for Galaxy” moniker and marks the start of a multi-year partnership between Samsung and Qualcomm. This doesn’t come out as a surprise since Qualcomm recently named Samsung as the official smartphone partner for the Snapdragon Pro series e-sports league.

Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 for Galaxy

Compared to the regular Snapdragon 8 Gen 2, the new Galaxy variant can reach higher clock speeds. Qualcomm has somehow managed to push the Arm Cortex-X3 “Prime” core up to 3.36 GHz. Currently, it is capped at 3.2 GHz on other Snapdragon 8 Gen 2-powered phones.

The remaining performance and efficiency CPU clusters have maximum clock speeds of 2.8 GHz and 2.02 GHz, respectively. Likewise, the Immortalis-based Adreno 740 GPU is also clocked higher at 719 MHz (versus 680 MHz on 8 Gen 2).

Memory Configurations

On the S23 series, Samsung is using the latest LPDDR5 and UFS 4.0 technologies for RAM and storage, respectively. UFS 4.0 is not available for the 128GB variants. The vanilla Galaxy S23 is available in two memory configurations: 8/128GB and 8/256GB. On the other hand, the Plus model skips the 128GB variant for a higher 512GB model.

Camera

Since Samsung is keeping the new 200MP ISOCELL HP2 sensor exclusive to the Ultra, the rest of the S23 series will have to do away with a 50MP main camera. The secondary cameras on the S23 and S23+ include a 10MP telephoto camera and a 12MP ultrawide camera.

Since this hardware setup is not much different from the S22/S22+,  Samsung is making up for this on the software front. The S23 duo brings improvements to Nightography, Night Selfie, and Night Selfie Video. In addition, you can use the two phones to shoot in High Resolution, Expert Raw format, and use the Photo Remaster tool to add finishing touches to the photos taken.

Samsung S23 Series Camera Setup

As for the selfies, the S23 and S23 Plus are expected to come with a 12MP selfie shooter marking the first resolution upgrade since the 2019’s S10.

Battery and Charging

Fueling the regular Galaxy S23 is a 3900mAh battery with support for 25W fast charging. The S23+ on the other hand packs a bigger 4,700mAh battery and will charge even faster at 45W. Likewise, the duo will boast 10W wireless charging. Moreover, they will ship with Android 13-based One UI 5.1.
