Sunil Paudel sentenced to 9 years in prison, fined 46.5 million in payment gateway corruption case

Kathmandu. Sunil Paudel, the suspended Managing Director of Nepal Telecom and then Executive Director of National Information Technology Center (NITC), has been sentenced to nine years imprisonment.

While under the leadership of NITC, Paudel has committed corruption during the purchase of National Payment Gateway (NPG), and the special court has also decided to pay a fine of Rs. Adding both these amounts comes to Rs 46 crore 53 lakh 16 thousand.

The joint bench of Teknarayan Kunwar and Muraribabu Shrestha on 7th Baisakh found Paudel guilty and acquitted the other eight defendants. The same bench determined Paudel's sentence on Tuesday.

Safai Paunema Hall, Secretary of the Ministry of Finance and the then head of the Budget and Programs General Branch, Madhukumar Marasini, the then Secretary of the Ministry of Science and Technology and the then Chairman of the National Center for Information Technology, Sanjay Sharma, the then Executive Director of the Center, Pranita Upadhyay, the then Director and Deputy Director of the Hall, Safal Shrestha, the Center's The then Assistant Director Ramesh Prasad Pokharel, the then Accounts Officer Nimbahadur Wali, Accounts Officer Rambahadur Budha and Computer Engineer Ramsharan Gaik.

The Abuse of Authority Investigation Commission has also registered another case against Sunil Paudel, who was found corrupt in the payment gateway purchase case, in the special court on May 10 for illegally acquiring property. The authority claims that the legal source of expenditure and investment of Paudel's property worth Rs 2375 lakh 46 thousand 324 has not been disclosed.
