The mobile service provider did not follow the rules of the authority, the new shirt code did not come into use after one year

The Telecommunication Authority of Nepal (TAN) had issued ‘Shirt Code and Toll Free Management Procedure, 2077’ to be used in telecommunication services last August.

The procedure required all mobile service providers to use the same short code for balance recharge, balance transfer and balance check.

Within six months of the procedure, all mobile service providers are required to use 122 shortcodes to recharge their balances, 133 to transfer balances and 144 to check their balances.

But even a year after the procedure was issued, mobile service providers have not used this shortcode. NEA had made this arrangement for the convenience of the users.

Mobile service provider Ncell has made arrangements to check the balance according to the new shortcode while other shortcodes have not been used. Similarly, Nepal Telecom and Smart Telecom have not used the shirt code.

Amber Sthapit, director of NEA’s regulation division, said that he would ask the mobile service provider about this. ‘We ask if it has not been used. There is a provision in the procedure that a new short code should be used within six months. He said.

He also said that he would instruct the mobile service providers to use the short code as mentioned in the procedure.

The procedure states that the service provider can operate both the old and new codes in parallel for one year. However, one year after the implementation of the procedure, only the code mentioned in the procedure has to be used.
