Twitter loses legal protection in India after disobeying IT rules

Twitter has lost legal protection in India following the Indian government’s decision. Twitter has lost liability protection against user content due to non-compliance with IT rules in India.

After this, the executives of the company may face criminal charges if any bad content comes from the platform.

India has taken legal protection of the International Guidelines and Digital Media Ethics Code Rules 2021, which was introduced by the Indian government three months ago for social media, saying that Twitter has no meaning and does not follow local government rules.

Indian police have filed about five cases against Twitter for child pornography and blasphemy. Recently, a case was filed against Twitter India chief Manish Maheshwari for showing Kashmir as a separate country on India’s map in Uttar Pradesh.

Tensions have been running high with Twitter since India introduced IT rules. According to the rules, any objectionable content has to be removed from the social platform within 36 hours by an autonomous process, which Twitter has not been able to do.

The Indian administration has also complained that social media has not appointed a residential grievance officer, chief grievance officer and nodal liaison person as per the regulations.

Consumers have repeatedly complained that the platform has not taken any action against the harassment. Twitter says it still needs some problems to comply with IT laws.
