When mobile access reached the villages, 90 percent started using broadband internet

Internet access has expanded to the masses as mobile access has reached the villages in the country. With the expansion of mobile networks and the use of smartphones, the Internet has reached more than 90 percent of the country’s population.

According to the Nepal Telecom Authority’s MIS report for April, the number of broadband internet users in the country has reached 90.56 percent. This is a population of more than 27.3 million.

The biggest contributor to this is the mobile internet. Out of 90 percent of the population with access to internet, 65.47 percent are using mobile broadband internet.

Three mobile service providers in the country, Nepal Telecom, Ncell and Smartcell are providing mobile services. These telecom companies have expanded 3G and 4G across the country. The number of 3G users of Nepal Telecom and Ncell is 119.56 million while the number of 4G users of all the three mobile services is around 7.7 million.

Similarly, the number of fixed broadband internet users is 24.40 percent while the number of wireless fixed broadband users is only 0.69 percent.

There are 40 internet service providers in the country. Lately, FTTH services have become popular among consumers. Its demand is also increasing.

Out of 40 internet service providers, WorldLink, Vinet, Suvisu, Nepal Telecom and Classic Tech are in the forefront. Internet service providers now have 6.15 million customers.

Wordlink’s customers have reached 478,000 while Nepal Telecom’s 293,000. Suvisu’s 200,000 and Vinet’s 144,000 have been reached. Classic Tech has reached 143,000 customers and TechMind has 59,000 customers.

If you look at the 11-year period in Nepal, the Internet has increased 40 times. Mobile usage has increased six-fold.
According to the ITU’s 2017 report, Nepal ranks 140th out of 176 countries in terms of broadband internet usage. In SAARC countries, Nepal is ahead of Bangladesh, Pakistan and Afghanistan.

If we look at the statistics of the last four-five years, the revenue from this sector is rising at an average of one trillion rupees. Examining the data from 2071/72 to 2076/77, it is seen that the revenue of the telecom sector has risen to an average of one trillion rupees.
