Common Sense Guide to Renting a Low Income Apartment

Everyone would like to live in a super nice house with an in-ground pool, seven bedrooms, five bathrooms and a six car garage, but that’s not within everyone’s grasp because of money. If you’re looking to save money to get to that point, renting a low income apartment is a great idea. There are some things you should be aware of, though, before you go looking around town.

When renting a low income apartment, you should do all the things you normally do when looking at an apartment (checking everything closely, making sure everything works and there doesn’t seem to be any problems.) There are some extra steps you can take, though, to make sure you’re not taken through the wringer and left out to dry, bound to a 12 or 24 month lease in an apartment that you’re not happy with.

One of the first things you want to do is compile a list of the low income apartments you’re considering and look at a map to study their location a little. Once you know the neighborhoods or areas you’re looking at, you can use the local newspaper archives or contact the police station to see what crime is like in the area. If you can find a cheap apartment in a low crime area, it’s going to be your best bet.

Beyond crime, you want to look for other things in the neighborhoods you’re thinking about moving into – amenities like parks, shopping, laundry facilities. If you find a low income apartment in a great location with many things nearby that can save you money on gas, you may want to move it to the top of your list.

By this point you should have your list narrowed down. At this point, it comes down to your personal decision. If you can, take a look in person at any apartments on your list and try to imagine it filled with your furniture and possessions. Will there be enough room? Do you like the layout of the apartment? Remember, just because you’re getting a rental doesn’t mean you have to settle.
