Simple SEO – Monitor Page Positions

Having a website to sell products or services is a great way to earn some money. You already know that the success of the website depends on the positions in search results for target keywords. You need to be on the top in order to get most of the clicks. To get on the top is rarely easy. There are many trivial and not so trivial SEO methods and approaches that can contribute to higher ranking in search engines.

For on-page SEO there are no secrets. You start with quality content, emphasize relevant keywords, add meta tags and you are done. Off-page SEO takes more effort and time. Building links is a process that never ends. Sometimes you will also slightly modify pages in order to improve keyword frequency or to update content. All these changes together with new backlinks directly influence ranking.

Ranking position is not something fixed. It is determined from few hundred parameters most of which are not known to the public. There is also some amount of randomness that additionally complicates evaluation of SEO activities. The best way to detect any wrong SEO approaches or positive changes is to track positions on a daily basis. With some time random fluctuations will cancel out and you will be able to see when changes occurred. This way you can easily figure out what modifications contributed to higher positions and what actions had no effect.

Tracking page positions can be done manually. This approach is free but is usable only if you have only few pages to monitor. In most cases it is advised to use dedicated tools for rank tracking. Usually, such tools track not only positions but also PageRank and the number of backlinks. Another benefit of using tracking tools is that the daily results are automatically stored in a database. The greatest value of tracking page positions with dedicated tools is in the graphical representations of tracking parameters. Every jump, either down or up, is a reflection of some change on the page, changes in the linking structure or some change in the ranking algorithm. For the later there is no simple solution, but for all SEO changes and activities you can directly see what effect they had. Of course, the changes will not be immediate, you will have to wait some time before the new pages are crawled and taken into account. Whenever you see some significant drop in position you can try to undo modifications that may have contributed to this change.
