WhatsApp chief claims Apple’s update to stop child abuse is ‘monitoring system’

The head of WhatsApp has claimed that the update brought to stop Apple’s child abuse is a ‘monitoring system’. According to Will Cathcart, head of WhatsApp, the system can easily scan users’ private content and use it as they see fit.

He also said that the system could be misused by spyware companies. In response to that tweet, Apple’s spokesperson said that users can also turn off the iCloud feature. Cathcart also said that the system would not work for all areas as it would detect sensitive images using a database.

Since Apple has repeatedly told Facebook about security issues, no one from Facebook is surprised this time around. Apple is bringing various child protection features to Messages, Photos and Siri. The Messages app notifies both children and parents of sending sexually explicit images or receiving content.

In this feature, if someone sends immoral pictures to children, the app itself will blur those photos and also send various caution notifications. If the child opens and sees such a sensitive image, the parent will also be notified.
