DJI’s Inspire has been the leading cinema drone lineup from the brand since it was first introduced in 2014. Following the first-generation Inspire came the Inspire 2 in 2016, which means it’s definitely time for a refresh now. Finally, the company has announced the long-awaited Inspire 3 recently. So in this article, we will go through the specs, features, availability, and expected price of the DJI Inspire 3 in Nepal.
DJI Inspire 3 Overview:
As expected from a long-awaited successor, the Inspire 3 comes with a whole lot of improvements over the Inspire 2. Let’s start things off with the design.
Design
Both the Inspire 2 and Inspire 3 have a similar arachnid-like design, but DJI has made some notable design improvements to enhance the drone’s mobility. It is now 20% more aerodynamic which reduces air resistance and in turn, delivers a slightly better battery life of 28 minutes compared to 25 minutes on its predecessor.
The Inspire 3’s improved design also means better agility. While both models can reach a top speed of around 58 mph, the Inspire 3’s maximum dive speed has increased from 9 m/s to 10 m/s, and the vertical ascend/descend speed has increased from 6 m/s and 4 m/s to 8 m/s.
The company is able to achieve this, all while making the drone heavier. It tips the scale at 3995 grams which is 550 grams more than the Inspire 2. But this increased weight also means an increased payload of 4310 grams compared to the previous model’s 4250 grams.
Furthermore, the Inspire 3 features new foldable quick-release propellers that are easy to store and don’t require re-installation before each flight. You can also lift or lower its landing gear which allows the camera to tilt up to 80 degrees and rotate 360 degrees with no sight obstructions.
Camera
The major upgrade in the Inspire 3 is in terms of cameras. The drone carries a full-frame Zenmuse X9-8K Air, which as per DJI, is their lightest yet.
This is a 35mm full-frame camera sensor capable of recording videos at up to 8K RAW, 8K/75fps for Apple ProRes RAWand 8K/25fps for CinemaDNG. To note, the ProRes RAW format is a first for any DJI drone. And to use it, as well as the CinemaDNG standard, you must first purchase a license key worth $979.
Regardless, the X9-8K Air supports 14+ stops of dynamic range to capture shots in complex lighting situations. And it comes with dual native ISO, making it a capable cinematic drone to capture videos in low lights.
Like Inspire 2, the Inspire 3 also support interchangeable lenses. DJI specifically has a lineup of DL-mount lenses which has now gained an additional 18mm F2.8 full frame lens and a new telephoto lens designed for 8K recording. The DL lens comes in 24mm, 35mm, and 50mm options.
Operation Modes
As usual, DJI has included a range of shooting modes to aid aerial content creation. The WayPoint Pro is the newest addition to the Inspire 3 which uses a real-time kinetic (RTK) system to achieve accurate positioning with centimeter-level precision. WayPoint also has two modes, called Repeatable Routes and 3D Dolly.
With Repeatable Routes, the drone will fly along the same route multiple times, maintaining the same altitude, speed, gimbal angle, and camera settings. This feature ensures that cinematographers can get the same shots every time they record a video.
Alternatively, 3D Dolly allows the cinematographer to manually control the drone to move back and forth along the same route while adjusting speed, gimbal angle, and other parameters to suit the needs of the shot.
The updated Spotlight Pro feature is also worth noting since it can automatically detect and lock onto subjects. Meanwhile, the drone’s obstacle-sensing capabilities have also been improved, with the option to turn on or off horizontal, upward, and downward sensing. Users can also manually set an obstacle alert range to suit the needs of different situations.
Controller
Moving on, Inspire 3 uses the RC Plus controller. It has a 7-inch display with a brightness of 1200 nits and can operate for 3.3 hours, which can be extended up to 6 hours using an external WB37 battery.
The controller also has a dual-control mode, which allows you to receive live feeds and control the drone independently. For video transmission, it uses DJI’s latest proprietary “Occusync” tech, the O3 Pro which can stream [email protected] feed and can cover a range of up to 15km.
