Government websites are not secure: Speaker Pathak

Speaker Pathak, while speaking at a training program organized by Nepal Telecommunications Authority and coordinated by Himalayan Green Corporation Pvt Ltd in Hetaunda on safe use of internet and social networks for provincial assembly members, said that hackers can hack government websites and data centers at any time.

He said that it is necessary to protect the work done on the Internet when the government works are moving towards the implementation of the paperless system. He said that it is necessary for the government to carefully implement the cyber security policy.

‘We are moving towards paper less governance. However, our government websites and data centers are not secure. Any time our websites can be hacked by hackers.’ He said, ‘Government should protect websites and data centers by developing its own system. For that, a proper policy should be made and implemented. The government should emphasize on reducing cyber security.’

He said that there has been a continuous increase in cyber crime incidents in recent times. He said that the government needs to make necessary preparations to reduce cyber crime.

In the event, Chiranjeevi Adhikari, general secretary of CAN Federation of Nepal and cyber security expert, facilitated the training. In the training, which was attended by 80 parliamentarians of Bagmati province, he said that all three levels of government should capitalize on ethical hackers in cyber security.

He emphasized that with the increasing use of technology, the subject of cyber security should be included in the curriculum as a compulsory education from the school level. In the program chaired by Vijay Kumar Rai, director of Nepal Telecommunication Authority, he said that the access of telecommunications services has been expanded to 4G and Broadband Internet services at the local level in all 77 districts. He said that along with the expansion of services, the challenges are also increasing accordingly.

For the past 25 years, the Nepal Telecom Authority has been working as a regulatory body in the telecom sector. It is working as an advisor to the government in formulating policies for the development and expansion of telecommunication services. It is working to provide quality and reasonable price telecommunication services and create a healthy competition environment between service providers.’ He said.

He said that about 95 percent of the population has access to mobile broadband service and about 125 percent of the population has access to mobile telephone service. He said that with the expansion of broadband internet service, the availability and use of online services has also increased, so the risk is also increasing in the same sector.

From children, even policy makers are at risk online and have become victims of cyber attacks. The growing interest in digital payment technology has added additional security challenges. It is necessary to reduce it, and it is necessary for ordinary citizens and policy makers to be aware of the control of that risk.’ He said.

He said that along with the creation of policies on cyber security, we should move forward by orienting the common citizens to minimize the challenges. He said that using multi-factor authentication and SIM cards with your own name will reduce cyber security risks.
