Tesla’s announcement to build a large battery factory in Shanghai, China


American car manufacturer Tesla Corporation has announced the construction of a new mega factory.

CEO Elon Musk announced via Twitter that Tesla is going to build a new mega factory in Shanghai, China. Musk said the new battery factory will be dedicated to manufacturing the company’s energy storage product, Megapacks.

At the signing ceremony of the project held in Shanghai on Sunday, a Vaughn Tesla official said, ‘The new plant will break ground in the third quarter of the year. After that, the production of Tesla will start from here in the second quarter of 2024.’

The new battery factory will initially produce 10,000 Megapack units each year, which is equivalent to about 40 gigawatts of energy storage per hour. It is mentioned in the agreement that the said products of the company will be sold worldwide.

It will be located in China’s Lin-Gang Special Zone Shanghai Pilot Free Trade Zone.

Lu Yu of Lin-Gang Special Zone said the construction of the factory is expected to create another industrial cluster worth more than 100 billion yuan, or about 14.6 billion US dollars.

Similarly, Zhuang Mudi, Deputy Secretary-General of the Shanghai Municipal Government, said that this project will further help the development of a new energy-storage industry and control Shanghai’s green and low-carbon transformation.
