Why are Google, Amazon, Microsoft and Meta cutting employees?
The world’s 4 largest technology companies (Google, Amazon, Microsoft and Meta) have been expelling thousands of employees from the company in recent months. The companies say that they are cutting jobs to manage financial problems and business.
Everyone can assume that the main reason for downsizing or layoffs in these companies is that they are investing heavily in artificial intelligence (AI). In this way, today we will discuss why tech companies are relying heavily on AI and why they are spending millions on its investment. This article is written based on the income of all companies in the second quarter.
Google – Sundar Pichai
Speaking about Google’s earnings this quarter, Alphabet and Google CEO Sundar Pichai said the company is making good progress on its AI plans. Pichai also revealed that he will continue to incorporate generative AI to improve search.
He says more companies are using AI to improve ad conversion rates and reduce the amount of toxic text that goes into AI models. Recently, the company merged Google Brain and DeepMind to form Google DeepMind to compete with companies like Microsoft and ChatGPT-maker OpenAI.
Microsoft (Bing Satya Nadella)
Microsoft has invested heavily in OpenAI. The company is using GPT technology in its Bing search engine and office suite. According to CEO Satya Nadella, AI will drive the company’s revenue growth. He said that Bing’s downloads have quadrupled since Microsoft added the chatbot.
Microsoft has also generated more than 200 million images through Bing integration. Nadella said building the large data centers needed to power AI would require large amounts of capital. He stressed that we will continue to invest in our cloud infrastructure, and especially AI-related spending by the company.
Amazon CEO Andy Jassy has also shown interest in investing in AI. Responding to a query on the company’s generative AI plans, he said the company is building an LLM and designing data center chips for machine learning.
JC also believes that LLM is accelerating Alexa’s potential to become the world’s best personal assistant. He said that it will cost billions to train AI models. It is Jasee’s opinion that AI is not far behind compared to other companies in investing in AI.
Meta – Mark Zuckerberg
Mark Zuckerberg, the CEO of Meta, has emphasized that the company will continue to work on the Metaverse project despite losses. Zuckerberg also revealed that the company is working on AI and machine learning technologies to power products such as Facebook’s news feed or advertising system.
Zuckerberg said that 2023 is an amazing year and what is happening now will impact every app and service in the future. The company aims to focus on the use of technology, including the chat experience on WhatsApp and Facebook Messenger, and image creation tools for posts on Facebook and Instagram.
