Xiaomi announced that it is set to launch a new A lineup of the Redmi series in Nepal. The first device in the series is the Redmi A1 which will hit the Nepali market after Dashain and before Tihar.

Design

The Redmi A1 comes in three colour options, namely Light Green, Light Blue, and Black. The design of the rear camera setup has taken inspiration from the Mi 11 and Mi 11 Lite.

The phone features a plastic body with a leather-like texture that helps with grip and avoids smudges. Both the power and volume buttons are on the left side of the device, while the bottom side houses a 3.5mm headphone jack, micro-USB port, and mic.

The dual SIM card tray on the right has a dedicated slot for a microSD card. Interestingly, the speaker is located on the top. Sadly, we do not get a fingerprint sensor with the Redmi A1.

Display

The front sports a 6.52-inch HD+ LCD display with a waterdrop notch. It has an 88.89% screen-to-body ratio and up to 400nits of typical brightness.

The display refreshes at a standard 60Hz and has up to 120Hz touch sampling rate. Xiaomi claims the display covers 70% of NTSC colour space.

Hardware

Under the hood, the phone is equipped with an entry-level quad-core MediaTek Helio A22 chipset that was announced in 2018. It is manufactured using a 12nm fabrication process and has four Arm Cortex-A53 clocked at up to 2.0GHz.

The Redmi A1 comes with 2GB LPDDR4X RAM and 32GB eMMC 5.1 storage.

Camera

The back features an 8MP main camera accompanied by an “AI camera.” For selfies and front videos, there is a 5MP camera on the front.

The phone can shoot video up to 1080p at 30fps.

Battery and OS

The 5000mAh battery the phone includes should give a good battery life. For charging, it uses a micro-USB portwhich only supports 10W charging.

Redmi A1 comes installed with Android 12 Go edition. The OS is clean and free of bloatware.

The Xiaomi Redmi A1 price in Nepal is not yet confirmed, but we expect it to be around Rs. 12,000. The phone will be available for Tihar after Dashain.

The Redmi A1 is the first A-series smartphone from Redmi. It’s an entry-level phone running Android Go edition OS. It should be a great option for people looking for a basic phone, as there are not many smartphones under Rs. 15,000 in Nepal.
