After the success of the first Nord, the OnePlus Nord 2 has now been officially presented. It’s the brand’s first smartphone with a MediaTek processor and it’ll soon be in stores for € 399 (Rs 55,890).
The OnePlus Nord 2 is the Chinese manufacturer’s latest smartphone and the direct successor to the 2020 OnePlus Nord. The device has improved considerably in many respects, but something has also remained the same, such as the entry price. The model with 8GB of ram and 128GB of internal storage costs € 399 . A variant with 12GB of RAM and 256GB of storage for € 499 has also been announced alongside.
Both versions are available in grey and blue and have a glass back. The grey version has a matte finish, while the blue one is shiny. There is also a separate color Green Wood for the Indian market. The release of the new device will take place on July 28.
Screen almost identical to predecessor
OnePlus equips the Nord 2 with a 6.43-inch AMOLED display and 2400-by-1080 pixel resolution. That’s a fraction smaller than the Nord, but we do see the same 90Hz refresh rate. This ensures that the display is refreshed 90 times per second and therefore offers a smooth user experience.
The optical fingerprint scanner is under the screen. OnePlus does not opt for a dual selfie camera as with the Nord. Instead, we see another single front camera. This allows you to shoot images of up to 32 megapixels.
OnePlus opts for MediaTek processor
After years of using Snapdragon chips, OnePlus is taking a different approach this year. The Nord 2 is equipped with the MediaTek Dimensity 1200 processor. This chipset is powerful enough for everyday tasks, playing 3D games and multitasking. The choice for this chip makes sense, according to OnePlus. To keep the price and performance attractive, a Snapdragon processor was not possible in this unit. Of course, there’s 5G support on board, so you’re ready for the future.
Also, various AI functions are possible through the processor. For example, artificial intelligence is used on the screen. Colors are boosted a bit in apps like VLC and YouTube, and low-resolution content is sharpened. This is how lower-resolution movies look better. Furthermore, thanks to AI in direct sunlight, the screen becomes a little brighter, so that it can still be read well. The camera also uses the smartness of the processor. For example, the device recognizes 22 scenes and adjusts the settings automatically.
The smartphone can accommodate two SIM cards, but expanding the storage space is not possible. The device is also not dust and waterproof and a headphone port is missing. However, stereo speakers are present and you use the well-known alert slider to switch between sound profiles. This is a physical slider on the right side of the device.
Main Triple camera borrowed from OnePlus 9
There are three cameras on the back of the OnePlus Nord 2. We know the 50-megapixel main camera has been borrowed from the OnePlus 9. There is optical image stabilization on board and also a night mode. You can also shoot photos in Ultra Nightscape mode for even better snaps.
Do you want to take a picture in a wider corner? Then you can use the wide-angle lens with a resolution of 8 megapixels. The third camera is a monochrome lens that we also know is from the OnePlus 9 series. This allows you to add filters to photos or take a black and white photo.
Filming is possible with the front camera and camera on the back at the same time. Filming with the primary camera can be done in a resolution of up to 4K at 30 frames per second. In addition, the device offers possibilities to film in slow motion or to make a time-lapse. OnePlus has also added a Pro mode during filming, so you can play manually with, say, the white balance, or easily adjust the focus.
Battery, fast charging and Android 11
The battery is larger than with the Nord and has a capacity of 4500 mAh. The charging speed at up to 65 Watts is also a lot higher, so the battery can be recharged faster. Wireless charging is not possible and reserved for the more expensive devices.
It is the first device with OxygenOS 11.3. That’s the slightly modified version of Android 11 with some fine tweaks. OnePlus says the device will also get updates to Android 12 and 13 and three years of security updates.
With two 5G SIM card slots and 5G download speeds up to 2.95 Gbps, the Nord 2 provides stable and reliable mobile internet support. The device also packs a rich pair of stereo-speakers for an immersive audio experience, and Haptics 2.0 to give smoother and more sensitive tactile feedback.
The OnePlus Nord 2 5G will receive two years of major Android updates and three years of
