Pushpa Basnet, CNN Heroes 2012, CNN Hero Award Nepali Nominated

Anuradha Koirala, a Nepali social worker had won CNN Heroes-2010 award
and now another Nepali social worker Pushpa Basnet has been nominated
for the CNN Heroes Award 2012. At the age of 28 Basnet has been
nominated for her service to children whose parents are serving time in
various prisons in the country.
Basnet says the children must not be forced to live behind bars with
their parents. In 2005 she had started her non-profit organisation Early
Childhood Development Centre.
At the time when Basnet first visited the women’s cell in the Kalimati
Police Sation in Kathmandu six years ago she was pursuing and
undergraduate course in social welfare. Pushpa Basnet’s visit to that
cell was to enquire about a one-year-old child living with his mother in
the cell. As Basnet says that incident made her work for the children of
imprisoned parents. In Pushpa Basnet’s shelter 40 such children are
living currently where she provides them with food, clothing, education,
medicines and all other basic things. She said she is giving shelter to
children from prisons in Dhading, Pokhara, Jajarkot, Phidim, Birgunj and
Nepalgunj.
This Nepali nominated for CNN Heroes 2012 award also runs a day care
programme for children under six years of age and a residential home
where mostly older children are given education, food, medical care and
a chance to live a normal life. So why we don’t vote Pushpa Basnet and
let her win the title CNN Heroes of the year 2012? This Nepali social
worker had done so many things and now it is our turn to vote Pushpa
Basnet for winning CNN Hero 2012 award.
