US Department of State Under Secretary, Wendy R Sherman Visits Nepal

Wendy R Sherman, US Department of State Under Secretary for Political
Affairs had visited Nepal yesterday. Sherman is the third highest
ranking US official at the State Department. This is the first high
level visit from the US in a decade. In late 2002, the Secretary of
State Colin Powel had visited Nepal.
Sherman is meeting senior government officials, political party leaders,
Nepal Army leadership, representatives of Tibetan community and civil
society activists, according to a US Embassy statement. She is also
meeting Prime Minister Baburam Bhattarai, Deputy Prime Minister and
Minister for Foreign Minister Narayan Kaji Shrestha and others today.
Yesterday she held talks with UCPN (Maoist) Chairman Pushpa Kamal Dahal
and discussed the progress in the ongoing peace and constitution
drafting process. Later, she held a meeting with Chief of Army Staff
General Chhatra Man Singh Gurung at the latter’s office. During the
meeting, shd hailed the role played by the Nepal Army in taking forward
the peace process and hoped that similar cooperation would continue in
the future as well. The duo also discussed about the ongoing Regional
Seminar on Disaster Response and Humanitarian Assistance Operations
organised by the Nepal Army. Prior to her arrival in Kathmandu, Nepal,
Sherman visited India. Her next stop after Nepal will be Bangladesh.
Under Secretary Sherman assumed her position on September 21, 2011.
