AIDS is Acquired Immuno Deficiency Syndrome caused by a retro virus called HIV or Human Immuno-deficiency Virus. It is a fast incurable fast spreading disease. AIDS was first noticed in USA in 1981. The virus of AIDS was discovered in 1984 by American and French scientists independently. Their names are Robert Gallo and Luc Montagnier respectively. AIDS may have passed from the African green monkey into human population in Africa during 1960s. AIDS is a disorder of cell-mediated immune system of the body. There is a reduction in the number of T-cells which stimulate antibody production by B-cells. This results in the loss of natural defence against viral infection. Causative agent: This disease is caused by a virus. This virus wajs identified and named by Americans as HCLV-III (Human Cell Leukemia Virus). But now the name of this virus is changed to HIV (Human Immuno Deficiency Virus). Mode of Transmission: AIDS is transmitted only by a contact of infected cells containing blood of a patient with the blood of a healthy person as in: 1. Unprotected sexual intercourse with an infected partner. 2. Use of contaminated needles and syringes to inject drugs or vaccines. 3. Use of contaminated razors for shaving. 4. Use of contaminated needles for boring pinnae (piercing ears). 5. Transfusion of infected blood or blood products. 6. Infected organ transplantation. 7. Artificial insemination. 8. From infected mother to her unborn child.
Controlling measures: The following steps may help in controlling this dreaded disease: 1. People, particular those in high-risk group, should be educated about AIDS transmission, advantage of using condoms, danger of sharing needles, etc. 2. Disposable needles and syringes should be used. 3. Unsafe Sexual habits should be changed immediately. 4. Before receiving blood, ensure that it has been screened for HIV.
