Nepal-China Optical Fiber Connection Successful Test
Successful Test of Nepal-China Optical Fiber Connection
Nepal has successfully conducted the Nepal-China Optical Fiber connection in order to improve the telecommunications service network of Nepal using Wired technology. Nepal now share’s bandwidth with both China and India, after last week’s successful test transmission via optical fiber using the land route from China. “We are now connected to China with Optical Fiber from Rasuwagadhi Checkpost (Nepal-China Border)”, Dilli Ram Adhikari, Nepal Telecom spokesperson said. He added “The successful test passed and will soon begin commercial usage”
‘Nepal Telecom’ and ‘China Telecommunications Corporation’, the government-owned Chinese company are now connected to one another via fiber optics through the land way. Last week, the technical team from both countries has tested fiber optical connection successfully. The exchange of bandwidth from Kathmandu and Beijing during the testing phase was successful. The official told, “Due to the risk of landslides, the connected device at Rasuwa Gadi checkpoint are now being transferred to Rasuwa Timmure. So, it can take some time for commercial usage”. The other government offices have been already shifted there.
Earlier the government initiated a plan to connect China through an optical fiber connection via Tatopani route under The South Asia Subregional Economic Cooperation (SASEC) program. In spite of installment of all the fibers, the expansion from both the sides was stopped because of The April 2015 Nepal earthquake. This is the main reason for shifting the project plan from Tatopani to Rasuwa. The telecom had installed about 90 kilometers of fiber from Dhading‘s Gorge to Rasuwagadi via Trushuli route. After the completion of this Fiber network, Nepalese companies will be able to purchase bandwidth from the Chinese company. Earlier, they were purchasing bandwidth from India and several other countries according to the need and cost effectiveness. Recently, Nepal Telecom is also connected to various Indian telecommunications service supply from Bhairahawa, Birgunj and Biratnagar checkpoint bordering India. In the year 2054 BS, Nepal and India were connected via an optical fiber for the first time.
The previous route was Nepal-India-Singapore-Hongkong and now the new route will be Rasuwagadi – Kerung – Tibet – HongKong. The IT experts like Manohar Bhattarai said that the new route will minimize the bandwidth cost because in the Indian side all the fiber networks are coming via sea route which’s installment costlier compared to the fiber opticals connected to China via land route. “Cheaper bandwidth means we can increase the Internet speed easily, Manohar Bhattarai added.
Various research done for the South Asia Subregional Economic Cooperation (SASEC) program suggest that Nepal will reduce it’s telephone bills and internet charges by 30 percent. when connected to the World Network via Optical fiber.
