What is a BIOS?
BIOS stands for the Basic Input/Output System which is a kind of software (know as firmware) built into the computer’s motherboard. The firmware or software is loaded while we boot our system. In short, BIOS wakes the system’s hardware up and then Operating Systems (OS) like MSDOS, Windows, Unix or iOS start up.
If you know about the architecture of UNIX, then exactly the same kind of situation is here. Don’t worry if you don’t know this also. It’s just how the Kernal and Hardware work in UNIX operating system. BIOS is stored in a ROM chip inbuilt inside the computer system which of non-volatile type. It’s just like the flash memory or ROM of your Android device. Even, some of you might have replaced your KitKat with Marshmallow, that is what we replace software stored there. Nowadays, (especially in PC, UEFI is being used which stands for Unified Extensible Firmware Interface that is also a kind of software in between system’s hardware and firmware.
Why is the BIOS update needed?
Let’s learn about need the BIOS update/upgrade before knowing the update procedure. In fact, it’s not mandatory to update your BIOS since your computer will be having a good working firmware version. But sometimes, there might be bugs in your BIOS which the manufacturer releases after so many PC usages (say after the customers’ feedbacks). Since technology is dynamic we need to update the BIOS for better improvement/ recognization of peripherals devices like Video Cards, Hard Disks, Memory Cards, and other inner attached components. For example, you bought a new computer back in 2009 (say Windows XP) and now you have installed a newer version of Windows (say Windows 10). In this case, updating to the latest version of BIOS will improve the performance of the OS, Hard Discs, CUP, SSD and it also provides better overclocking support which eventually is a good for healthy battery saving.
We just knew about BIOS and know the importance of updating it and now we gonna learn how to update the BIOS.There are lots of tools available to update your BIOS most of them are paid once. But here I’m sharing you the free original manufacturers BIOS update. You need to locate your PC’s BIOS update setup file which is available on the respective manufacturer’s website (usually in Support and Drivers Section) For example, I need to perform a BIOS update on Acer Aspire E15 E5-5736. At first, I will go to Acer’s Website and then navigate to “Drivers and Manuals” page which looks like this.

There I search by Serial Number or SNID or search by Product Model. Here, I searched by product Model as “Aspire E5-573G” and select the Windows 10 64 bit operating system. Then it shows Drivers, Documents, BIOS/Firmware, Patch, Applications and OS tabs. Then I click on BIOS/Firmware tab which showed the different versions of BIOS with some description. Download the latest BIOS version and install it from your Windows. After the device it will start installing the new BIOS version. You can later check your BIOS version by going to BIOS settings.
Note: Upgrading your system BIOS incorrectly could harm your Computer System. Please proceed with caution.
