While the steep, fragile topography of the Himalayas makes these events naturally occurring, our lack of early warning systems turns natural hazards into entirely preventable human disasters.
The Cost of Unplanned Infrastructure
The recent events in Karnali Province highlight a growing crisis across rural Nepal: haphazard road construction. The trend of using heavy excavators to carve un-engineered dirt tracks (so-called “dozer roads”) directly into unstable hillsides has dangerously destabilized the soil structure. When the intense August monsoon rains saturate these freshly cut slopes, they inevitably collapse.
We cannot stop the rain, but we absolutely can mitigate the damage. Bikas ko nam ma binaas garnu hudaina. (We must not cause destruction in the name of development).
How Smart Tech Can Predict Landslides
The solution to reducing casualties isn’t just better roads—it’s real-time data. Modern Internet of Things (IoT) technology allows us to predict landslides hours, if not days, before they happen. By embedding smart soil-moisture and tilt sensors deep into the hillsides of high-risk areas like Jajarkot and Sindhupalchok, we can monitor the exact moment the ground becomes critically saturated.
These devices operate continuously, sending live telemetry data to platforms like the Sensor Portal. When the soil moisture crosses a dangerous threshold or the inclinometer detects a micro-shift in the earth, the system can instantly trigger automated SMS warnings and loud sirens in the village below. This gives sleeping residents the crucial 10 to 15 minutes they need to evacuate safely to higher ground.
Moving Forward: A Call for Action
The 2026 monsoon season must serve as a wake-up call for both provincial governments and the central authority in Kathmandu. Relying purely on rescue helicopters and relief funds after a disaster has occurred is an outdated strategy. We must pivot to proactive disaster prevention.
