The country’s smallest National Park is a protected area in the Himalayas established in 1976 covering an area of 106 square km. Rara National Park is managed by the Department of National Park and Wild Life Conservation and protected with the assistance of Nepal army.
“सुन्दरता को भण्डार सहारा , के खनाया यसै रारा मा , रारा कि अप्सरा” Late king Mahendra who is known in the literature field as the Ma.Bi.Bi Shah has fashioned this poem in 1964 sitting under a Juniper tree at Mili Chaur. Most people write down their thoughts and imagination into words with the peaceful and tranquil environment of Rara Lake. The majestic Rara Lake lies at an altitude of 2990 meters above sea level covering an area of 10.8 km square. A special track is been made around the Rara lake so that the tourist can go around and explore the beauty and nature of the Lake with their cycles, horses or by foot. Walking around the Rara Lake takes 3-4 hrs. We can also observe the wilderness of the lake by going in boating.

There is a good facility of hotels and camping sites for the tourist coming to the lake. If the weather is so serene and friendly, camping near the lake is the best to feel the calmness and beauty of Rara. Though the winter is cold and sees heavy snowfall, summer around the pristine Rara lake is quite pleasant. The blue water reflecting the show peaks and the surrounding looks picturesque and breathtaking. During the summer and spring time, the lake is covered densely by colorful wildflowers on the banks. April to June is pretty warm in this region and if you are lucky, you can witness the light snowfall which looks so romantic with the blue mass of water. To get the perfect, and completed view of Rara lake, we need to walk 3 hrs from the bank of Rara lake to the Murma top that is at the height of 3690 meters. The whole part of the biggest lake in Nepal can be seen from the Murma Top along with the most of the villagers in Mugu. The natural beauty of the lake makes us forget all the hardship of long treks we had and delight our heart with the view from Murma Top. If you reach Rara lake someday then you should not miss the view from the Murma Top. In comparison to other places, Rara remains unexplored and unknown. Rara lake of Mugu is the precious gem of Karnali. Once we are aware of the radiance of the lake, we get the feeling of going there at least once in a lifetime.

This splendid Rara varies in prettiness seasonally. The cold snowy surrounding in the winter turns into the colorful traces of wildflowers in the spring. The color of grace is glorious in the morning and shining in the day and sublime in the evening. Rara changes its color of beauty as we change the mode with time and amazes her expectations. Rara lake being surrounded by the Rara National Park has unique floral and faunal importance with rare and vulnerable species. The park flora consists of 1074 species and among them Rhododendron, Fur, Brown Oak, Black Juniper, West Himalayan Spruce, Himalayan Cypress, Oak and birds species are found in the sub-alpine region. 51 species of mammals and 214 species of birds are found around the area. And migrant birds like Eagles, Merganser, Mallard appear in the winter season. After exploring the magical and mesmerizing Rara Lake, we head to the Talcha Airport to fly back to Nepalgunj. It takes about 3 hrs walk to reach Talcha from Rara Lake. There are lodges and hotels in Talcha with good accommodation and food.

The eleven-day journey from Humla to Mugu might be a little strenuous. Yes, you might have to take the treacherous walk through snow or through toylander crushing heat the days might seem longer and night shorter. But after witnessing the exhilarating beauty of the distant world you come out as a different person.
