Here’s the first look at Huawei Mate 60 Series’ “Spirit Island”

A leaked render of the upcoming Mate 50 has everyone talking about it. The render shows the top half of the display with a pill-shaped notch. This has drawn comparisons with Apple’s Dynamic Island. So, let’s get into the “Spirit Island” and other leaked specs and rumored features of the upcoming Huawei Mate 60 series.

Huawei Mate 60 Series Overview:

Design

The Huawei Mate 60 series is rumored to bring back a pill-shaped camera cutout to its flagship lineup. This feature was present in Huawei’s Mate and P series up until 2020 with the last devices being the Mate 40 Pro and P40 series.

On the upcoming Mate 60 series, Huawei plans to separate the selfie camera and 3D ToF sensors from the bezel, as they did before. However, this time, they will use a centered pill-shaped punch-hole design for the front-facing cameras instead of the previous side or behind fully-fledged notch placements.

It will be the first time Huawei uses a central dual selfie camera, similar to the iPhone 14 Pro. The “Spirit Island” feature, possibly inspired by the iPhone 14 Pro’s “Dynamic Island,” will also be included in the front-facing camera module by Huawei for this time being.

Performance

Due to the ongoing restrictions from the US, Huawei faces significant problems in integrating US-based chipsets into its smartphone models. Previously, there was a strong assumption that Huawei’s upcoming series would have Qualcomm’s processor. However, now rumors suggest that one of the models in the series will instead use Huawei’s own chipset.

Previously, the series was supposed to be powered by the Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 processor. However, due to the ongoing US sanctions against Huawei, the company might face challenges in obtaining the required licenses to use 5G chips. As a result, at least one model in the Mate 60 series will have Huawei’s self-developed 5G chip as an alternative solution to overcome the restrictions imposed on accessing external chipsets.

Huawei Mate 60 Series Launch (Expected)

As of now, Huawei has not made any official announcements regarding the Mate 60 series, including its release date. Nonetheless, leaks indicate that the company is actively working on the phone, and there is a possibility that it could be launched in the coming months.
