Hackers contact people on the victim’s contact list and ask them to participate in various events organized by them. By doing this, a link is sent and the recipient is asked to click on it. On clicking the link, contacts are asked to share a six-digit OTP code.

According to an investigating officer, after clicking the link once and sharing the OTP, the accused can access the WhatsApp number from another phone. Because this OTP is actually a WhatsApp verification code.

WhatsApp accounts are linked to phone numbers on the device. When hackers try to link them to themselves, they try to do it through the OTP code. Users lose access to their WhatsApp account by sharing this code with hackers.

The criminals then impersonate the victim’s account and request money from the user’s contacts saying it is an emergency and promise to return it later. They can also use the hacked account for criminal activities.
