Students of Srikrishna Secondary School located in Shuklaphanta Municipality-10 have been involved in earning along with studying.

Students studying Agriculture JTA and ISC AG in the school do not only study in the classroom, but also cultivate vegetables on the land owned by the school.

Students have been cultivating vegetables using organic fertilizers and organic pesticides. The vegetables produced by the students are sold from the garden. The demand for vegetables produced by organic methods is increasing.

Rohit Bohra, a student of ISC AG of the school, said that he has been participating in experimental classes along with studying in the school and cultivating vegetables. “Along with the work of studying in school, we are excited to study after starting to get pocket money”, he said.

The school makes students participate in 20 percent theoretical knowledge (textbook) and 80 percent practical classes. Students have now planted cucumbers, gourds, parsley, chillies, bitter gourds, gourds and chillies in the school grounds.

One hundred students are studying in the agricultural technical stream of the school. The students have been doing the work of irrigating the vegetables, applying fertilizer, diagnosing diseases, and applying Godmail in turn. Anil Dagaura, a student of the school, said that along with vegetable cultivation, pulses and oilseeds such as rice, wheat, lentils are grown according to the season.

“We are directly involved in the work of keeping seeds and producing vegetables from khanjot godmel in the farm”, he said, “With the commercial farming methods, information is easily available for disease prevention, learning opportunities are available.”

Sameer Dhanuk, a teacher who has been teaching agricultural subjects of the school, said that the work is being done to inform the students about the agricultural machinery, tools and equipment used for farming by taking them directly to the farm.

“We have been trying to empower the students who have graduated from the school in the agricultural sector”, he said, “Until now, the students who have studied agriculture from the school have not been unemployed, so far more than three dozen students are working in the government service, some have become self-employed by opening their own agrovets.”

Students have been producing vegetables worth more than five lakh rupees every year on the school land. 75 percent of the amount from the sale of the produced vegetables is being deposited to the students and 25 percent of the amount is being deposited in the school fund.

The money received by the students is used for educational purposes. The money collected in the school fund is spent on agricultural tools, equipment, seeds etc. for the students.

Lal Bahadur Singh, chairman of the school management committee, said that arrangements have been made to provide direct on-site technical education to the students who are studying agriculture in the school, along with the farming system, about fish farming and mushroom production. Two ponds have been constructed in the school for fish farming.

“We have arranged for the production of seasonal and off-season mushrooms in the school building”, he said, “we have also set up a state-of-the-art laboratory for crop science in the school for the students.” Along with vegetable farming, students get money from fish and mushroom sales.
